certification standard
EN ISO 13688 is the fundamental universal standard for protective clothing, which specifies the basic performance, design, and information requirements that all types of protective clothing must meet before entering the EU market. It does not involve specific protective performance (such as fire and chemical protection) and must be used in conjunction with other product standards targeting specific risks. It cannot be used alone as a basis for certification of protective clothing.
Standard Core Testing Requirements
1. Harmlessness (material safety)
To ensure that protective clothing materials do not have adverse effects on the health of the wearer, the main testing items include:
PH value: Textile materials are tested according to ISO 3071, leather is tested according to ISO 4045, with a limit range of 3.5 to 9.5.
Hexavalent chromium: The hexavalent chromium content in leather clothing shall not exceed 3 mg/kg (tested according to ISO 17075).
Nickel release: Metal accessories that come into long-term contact with the skin, such as buckles and zippers, must have a nickel release rate of less than 0.5 μ g/cm ²/week (tested according to EN 1811).
Azo dyes: Azo dyes that release carcinogenic aromatic amines must not be detected (tested according to EN 14362-1).
Color fastness: The color fastness to sweat stains should reach at least level 4 of the gray scale index.
2. Ergonomics and Comfort
Design: Clothing should be easy to put on and take off correctly and remain in place, without exposing any body parts during movement; Sufficient adjustment system or size range should be provided to accommodate different body types and ensure compatibility with other protective equipment.
Comfort: There should be no rough, sharp, or hard surfaces that irritate the skin; Do not restrict normal activities by being too tight, too loose, or too heavy. For clothing that incurs significant ergonomic burdens due to protective needs (such as heat stress), manufacturers must provide specific recommendations and appropriate duration of continuous use in the instructions for use.
3. Aging (dimensional stability)
Cleaning treatment: Clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If the cleaning frequency is not specified, perform 5 cleaning cycles on the sample. If cleaning will cause a rapid decline in performance, the manufacturer must indicate the maximum number of cleaning times in the label.
Dimensional variation limit: Measure according to ISO 5077 after washing, and according to ISO 3175-1 after dry cleaning. The length or width variation of woven fabrics shall not exceed ± 3%, and that of knitted and non-woven fabrics shall not exceed ± 5%, unless otherwise specified in special standards.
4. Compatibility and Identification
Compatibility: Clothing must not compromise its overall protective performance in areas such as cuffs and pant legs.
Identification: The label must be clear and easy to read, written in the official language of the destination country, including manufacturer information, product code, size pictograms according to EN 3635 standard, specific protection standard numbers applicable, care symbols and instructions, and other information.
Instructions for use: It must be provided with the product and written in the official language of the place where the product is sold. The content includes manufacturer and notified body information, applicable standards, hazard protection pictograms, material composition, pre use inspection, usage restrictions, storage and maintenance cleaning instructions, etc.
